Security Comparison: Double-Glazing vs Single-Glazing

When it comes to home security, single-glazing is a weak point. It offers minimal resistance to intruders, who can easily break through it with a single forceful blow, granting them easy access to your property.

In contrast, double-glazing is a formidable obstacle. Its two layers of robust glass provide a significant challenge to would-be intruders. Attempting to break through it using a blunt or heavy object will generate a series of loud thuds, which could alert you or your neighbours to the attempted break-in.

Moreover, the layer of gas between the two glass layers serves as an effective cushion. Unlike traditional glass, which would typically crack and shatter upon impact, the gas layer in double-glazing disperses the force of the impact across the glass, making it far more difficult to shatter.

Is Double-Glazing Burglar-Proof? Given enough time, a determined burglar can potentially force their way through any security measure. The key is to make it as difficult and time-consuming as possible, increasing the chances of them being caught.

For instance, breaking through a single-glaze panel of glass is a quick and easy feat – a burglar can simply hurl a brick through it and be inside your home in seconds, undetected.

In contrast, attempting to break through double-glazing with a brick would create a shattering sound as it penetrates the first layer of glass. However, the brick would likely lose enough speed and force that it would not penetrate the second layer, forcing the burglar to attempt another blow. This would create additional noise, making it more likely that they will be detected.

By this point, the burglar will have made a significant amount of noise. If they choose to persist, there is a high chance that a neighbour or passer-by will call the police, thwarting their efforts to gain entry to your home.
